I’ve spent many nights wondering why certain things trigger me so deeply, why a specific tone of voice or a forgotten text message can send me spiraling into a place of fear that feels much younger than I am today... It’s a heavy, confusing feeling, isn’t it? I’ve been there, sitting in that quiet space, feeling like a version of myself from twenty years ago is suddenly running the show.
If you’re reading this, I want to start by saying: I see you. I see the courage it took just to click on a post about childhood trauma. It’s a brave thing to look backward so you can finally move forward. Together, we’re going to explore a practice that has been truly transformative for me and so many of our clients at 2 of Hearts Healing Center: Shadow Work.
Shadow work isn’t about hunting for monsters or rehashing pain for the sake of it... It’s a gentle invitation to meet the parts of yourself that had to hide away just to survive. It’s about lifting the veil on those old blueprints and realizing that while they kept you safe once, you might be ready to build something new.

What Exactly is Shadow Work?
So many of us grow up being told to "just stay positive" or "let the past stay in the past." But the truth is deeper than that. Our "Shadow" is simply the collection of parts, emotions, memories, and traits, that we’ve suppressed or denied. When we experience childhood trauma, our younger selves often lock away certain parts of our personality to stay safe or to be loved by the adults around us.
Using shadow work prompts for childhood trauma is like holding a lantern in a dark room. We aren't trying to get rid of the shadow; we’re trying to integrate it. We’re saying, "Hey, I see you’re hurting, and it’s okay to come out now." It’s a profound way to reclaim your power.
But before we dive into the prompts, I want to offer a gentle reminder: this work can be intense. It’s natural to feel a bit overwhelmed or even a little resistant. Please, listen to your body. If a prompt feels too heavy, it’s okay to close the journal and come back later. Your healing doesn't have a deadline.
Creating Your Sacred Space
Before you start writing, I invite you to create a nurturing environment. This isn't just a "to-do" list; it’s a sacred practice.
Find an Anchor: Maybe it’s a favorite crystal, a warm cup of tea, or a soft blanket.
Check Your Breath: Take three deep, slow breaths. Notice how your body feels against the chair.
Set an Intention: Try saying to yourself, "I am safe to explore my truth today."
If you find that your nervous system is feeling a bit "buzzy" or anxious, you might want to explore some somatic healing exercises first to get grounded.

Here are 20 prompts designed to help you gently peel back the layers. Take your time with these, maybe just choose one per day.
Exploring the Echoes
The Event: What specific event from your childhood still feels "loud" in your mind today? When you think of it, where do you feel it in your body?
The Initial Feeling: Recall a significant memory you’d classify as traumatic. How did you feel in that exact moment? How do those same feelings surface in your adult life now?
The Belief System: What "rules" did you learn about the world because of your trauma? (e.g., "I can’t trust people," or "I have to be perfect to be safe.")
Survival Strategies: How did you cope with traumatic experiences as a child? Did you hide? Did you become the "funny one"? Acknowledge how these strategies actually served you then.
The Identity Blueprint: How have the messages you received as a child shaped the choices you make today? Are those choices truly yours, or are they reactions to the past?
Understanding the Landscape
Emotional Weather: What emotions did you feel most often as a child? Do you notice yourself "defaulting" to those same emotions today when things get stressful?
Relationship Ripples: How does your childhood trauma show up when you’re trying to connect with others? Do you push people away before they can leave you?
The Unmet Need: What did that younger version of you need most during those hard times that they didn't get? How can you give that to yourself today?
The Mirror: What negative patterns do you see repeating in your life? If these patterns were trying to tell you something about your childhood, what would they say?
The Little You: When you think about the child you were during those traumatic times, what feelings come up? Is it pity? Anger? Love? Tenderness?

Lifting the Veil on the Present
Sense of Self: How has your trauma influenced the way you talk to yourself? Is your inner critic actually the voice of someone from your past?
The Barriers: What is the biggest thing stopping you from reaching out for help? Is it a fear of being "too much" or a belief that you "should" be over it by now?
Suppression: Are there emotions you feel "guilty" for having? What would happen if you gave those emotions permission to exist for just five minutes?
Discipline and Shame: How were you disciplined as a child, and how did that make you feel about your worth? Do you still "punish" yourself today in similar ways?
Self-Punishment: In what ways do you subconsciously sabotage your happiness because you feel you don't deserve it?
The Path to Integration
The Gift of Forgiveness: What is one thing you can forgive your younger self for? (Remember: You were doing the best you could with the tools you had.)
Therapeutic Discovery: Aside from journaling, what activities make you feel most "at home" in your body? Is it dancing, painting, or walking in nature?
The Conflict Compass: The next time you have a disagreement, ask yourself: "Am I reacting to what’s happening now, or is this an old wound being poked?"
The Vision of Healing: If you were fully healed from this trauma, what would your daily life look like? How would you breathe? How would you speak?
The Next Step: What is one tiny, gentle step you can take today to show that "little you" that they are safe now?
